Meco 5 - Low Hangers 8Like Gus Kasparov vs Bobby Fisher (or Canton vs Ward-o), an epic chess match took place on Monday night. The Meco Piledrivers came up short in a title game that took many identities. There was an electric atmosphere in the gym as the crowd was abuzz with anticipation. THe game did not dissapoint.
The first round of the match went to a quick and aggressive Low Hangers squad. This is where the game became a chess match. Meco tried to slow the match down and play a patient game. Doing this successfully, they tied the game at 1-1. Game three showed the worth of Rage. Early in the match, Rage caught a stinger and began a wreckless charge. He caught a blindside ball from the left while in full sprint. With two balls in hand, he got two direct hits on the two remaining Hangers (i believe it was Hanson 1 and Andy Dick), giving Meco a 2-1 lead. The Low Hangers responded immediately by winning the last three matches of the half. Two of these games featured late chokes by the Piledrivers. With the score Meco 2 - Low Hangers 4, the teams went to halftime.
The second half started with a hard earned defensive gem of a victory for the Piledrivers. Sanford, Wolf and Andy had teh Low Hangers three men to two and were able to dodge everything thrown at them for the last 80 seconds to secure the win.
The Lowhangers won the next two and with the game in the balance, at 6 - 3, the Piledrivers stepped up their game. TJ and Geoff began firing some BB's and Andrew caught everything thrown his way. The Piledrivers clawed their way back in. With the game 6-5, there were 10 seconds left in a match Meco had four players left on the floor against five Low Hangers. Meco needed to attack. With two seconds left, Jones made the decisive hit to send the game to OT... but wait, one second left, Hammer hit... the decisive Meco loss.
The Low Hangers played very well. They had a quick and organized counter-attacking game. They also made more catches than any other team we have played.
Meco had many notable performances. THe aforementioned Rage charge was very memorable. Kelley, Jones and Andrew (or is it Ramrod or Rambo or something) were all effective. Everyone else was plagued with inconsistency.
It was obvious from the start that the Piledrivers were far too hyped for the game. They could not settle down. The Wolf let things get very personal and was often eliminated early. Caraco made some catches but only oone hit. Squirrel either went the distance or was an early out. Big Bri hit some players but got hit with a 12 to 6 curve several times. Evel was steady and had one of the finest performances of the evening, eliminating five players in one match!!
The final game, though disappointing, was a fine contest. Had Meco brought their A game, it would have been a much more interesting night. As it is, the Piledrivers finish second.
4 wins, 2 losses, 42 points, second place
