Season Wrap

As i saw it, in one hundred words or less....

After a very strong start, Meco entered game 2 way too cocky and blew it. Game three was a mess. The Piledrivers were clearly outmatched and could not get anything going. From game four to the end, the Piledrivers got back on track and finished strong! In fact, we were the only team to win a crossover game. Maybe the late season success started when we stopped complaining about the new rules and new balls and just returned to playing dodgeball! Gives us some optimism for next session.

Post your season reviews... anything i missed... anything you liked or hated about the season!

Game 6

Meco Piledrivers 8 - The Head Hunters

In the final game of the season, the Piledrivers were faced with an uphill battle. The schedule makers left the Meco with an 11:00 start time in a cross over game against a team from the top division. The start time was not a challeng to most, although three of Meco's finest could not make the match do to a variety of reasons. Road Rage missed the game with a sore uterus. The swelling in his uterus was such that it rendered him immobile. We were also missing Hetero. Hetero had to make a shopping trip for new frames as well as a new pair of pumps. Finally, Backhaus could not attend as his fiance had important decorating plans and did not want her beau to leave the house at such a late hour. Backhaus knew that he would need his beauty rest in order to function in his other duties as a sub-par history teacher. (The math teacher on the team noticed that backhaus made only two-thirds of this seasons games! Now that's dedication!)

As the game began, there were only five Piledrivers present. In spite of this, the Piledrivers prevailed. Partway through game two, reinforcements arrived in the form of NY and Free Agent. The game ended with Head Hunters getting the win. THen the fun began. With full numbers and and even playing field, the match took off. The Piledrivers established the tone early and maintained pressure through out. THe turning point was game three (the first at even strength). With the game heading to overtime, Sanford and TJ made catches to secure the win. This seemed to take the wind out of the sails of the Head Hunters.

There were several recurring themes during the game. First was the game of the season from TJ. His hands were sticky and kept calling for "hands team". His strategy was to catch everything. This caught the attention of the opposition who sarcastically yelled to one of their own, "nice strategy, throw to the guy that catches every ball".

Free Agent out ran anyone that Head Hunters had to offer and won every ball. Bornt made several catches. NY did less this week than last. Big Bri fired mercilessly and hit several Hunters.

The Headhunters deserve some press coverage as there were several noteworthy opponents. First; the pitcher: this guy threw the ball as hard as anyone we have seen, infact, hard enough that it stung to get hit. There were several phenomonal arguers. Their main argument was "if I am out, then so is he". Often, there was no more logic behind it, but that is what made their arguments beautiful. Finally, the Matrix or Spiderman (we called him both) was one of the most insane people i have ever seen. Flips off the wall, somersaults, dives, and several other acrobatic moves... all while wearing a skin tight synthetic shirt.

Inspite of all of these performances, my man of the Match was Kelley. In a nonchalant fashion, Geoff patiently hit one Head Hunter after another. He calmly drilled Spiderman as he came out of a roll. He drilled another player as he leapt through the air. He was not only an offensive force. He also made several fantastic catches. Geoff played a fantastic game.

This game clinched a third place finish for the Piledrivers. One point behind F'nA. The two point performance against DJ Building proved to be our undoing.

The next session starts soon.

Final Standings

Beer and Wings

Lets get a date... Big Bri, make a suggestion for the end of the season beer and wing fest and lets see who can go that day....

Other notes

In exciting dodgeball news, Periwinkle finally got a shirt. He is now wearing the official colors of DJ Building... don't worry, he is still wearing no sleeves.

Game 5

Meco Piledrivers 10 - Justice 2

In a game that could see the Piledrivers clinch a winning season, the boys from Meco did not disappoint. The dominance started early and continued until the final whistle. It is easy to look at this game and pick out some very important things that Meco was able to do; things that have not always happened in the past.

The first game began with an over confident Meco making silly mistakes. It appeared that the Piledrivers may be destined to playing at their opponents level again. In an effort to maintain the form of last week, the Wolf was the first out. With two minutes left, Sanford, Rage and the Free Agent were squared off against 5 members of Justice. Two catches and two hits later, the tables were turned and Meco never looked back.

Questions arose from the inclusion of three female members of Justice. How would Meco Piledrivers react to this? The questions were promptly answered when Big Bri fired fastball after fastball after fastball at the girls, eventually hitting one that had already been eliminated. This was reminiscent of Meco's play against a pre-teen last year that Wolf and Rage aggresively attacked. It sends the message that nothing is sacred on the court. If you step on to the dodgeball court, someone from Meco will try to drill you.

TJ and the Free Agent fired some particularly memorable shots. The scales of justice on the shirts of the opposition were certainly hit hard many times. At one point a member of Justice made the remark "that was another solid hit".

Some intense rivalries formed during the match. The only member of Justice not sporting the scales was an athlete wearing a gray t-shirt. He was the loudest dodgeball player anyone has ever seen... he made more grunts and squeaks and huffs and puffs than we have heard in the previous year and a half combined. He also attempted the ball-less decoy run perfected by the Wolf last session. He and Rage had a fierce contest between eachother. Often ignoring the rest of the team, these two fierce competitors battled often. Each had their own kamikazes... (although Rage had a low percentage success rate, at least it was fun to watch).

Kelley got drilled in the face by what may be a brewing rival, the referee. In turn, Kelley rallied the Piledrivers to all attack the ref at the start of the last game. In a true show of sportsmanship, when Kelley was the last man standing, the ref joined him until the end!

No game report would be complete without the mention of a new nickname... Rage has now become "hetero". In an early part of the game, he attempted to insult soccer players by saying "I'm not into soccer, I'm hetero"... this was followed by the man in stylish designer frames gracefully leaping and pirouetting around in his attempt to eliminate everyone with kamikazes. It is sometimes a difficult task to keep Reebok Pumps attached to the ground... Hetero just had to soar!

3 wins - 2 losses, 33 points

Other notes After what is perhaps the most ineffective game of dodgeball ever, founder of the Meco Piledrivers has been demoted to team journalist. This appears to be the only skill he has that is even remotely adequate.

Beer and Wings

Big Bri would like to host the Piledrivers for a night of Beer and Wings at O'Tooles. (somehow, they trust him to be a manager at this establishment).

Please take the time to reply so that we can find a good time to hang out together!

Game 4

Meco Piledrivers 7 - The Pipe Kings 5

Inconsistent play was the recipe on Tuesday night as the Piledrivers jumped out to a nearly insurmountable lead, only to need a heroic effort in the last game to avoid the collapse. The Piledrivers jumped out and won game one with ease and took game two in overtime. Game two included a sack trap from Backhaus. He selflessly allowed his sack to take the brunt of a throw and then made the catch. After losing game three Meco won games four and five and it appeared that the rout was on. Meco up 4-1 with halftime approaching.

It was at this point that the wheels fell off. It would be difficult to point your finger at one player or even two or three players. It was a case where in each game, somebody made the crucial error that cost the match. Whether it was a lame weak throw by NY Caraco, or an ill fated attempt at a catch, or a suicide attack gone wrong. Somebody blew it in every game! This allowed the Pipe kings to narrow the gap. The Wolf showed some flashes of the team MVP form of last saeason. He was the first player out in almost every game. However, when he stayed on the field, he was very effective offensively and defensively.

Rage continued to be a steady force contributing on both sides of the ball. Big Bri is starting to turn his arm in to a consistent weapon. Free Agent Rich Monroe demolished a few players with a cannon of an arm until late in the game when his arm was completely shot. Geoff continues to play consistent dodgeball. NY Caraco contributed very little (other than a top quality beard and a few wise ass comments). In one game after making a catch (his only positive play of the evening) he said "i believe this is where i talk trash... I own you! Brint it". Ironically, someone did bring it and elimintaed him shortly after.

Entering the last game, it was Meco clinging to a narrow 6-5 lead. With a scarce 30 seconds left to play, there were three Piledrivers against only one King and it appeared the game was over. At this point, TJ gave into the taunting of the Pipe Kings and attempted a full court throw with a big ball. The result was a catch and overtime. With their backs against the wall, the Piledrivers made three catches in the overtime session to secure the win.

It is becoming evident that in order to be successful, the wreckless balls out style from last year has to be replaced with a cautious and defensive style game. When all of the Piledrivers commit to this, the wins come fairly easily. However, too often the allure of the quick attack is too much and these mental mistakes cost games. This was illustrated when Rich yelled "hold on to the little balls! Play Smart!!!". A veteran Piledriver replied with "I know, i was just too fired up!"
